Artist’s Statement.

As a teenager I was fascinated by the effect of theatrical lighting singling out an actor or musician. I used a camera and flash to capture moments of these shows but soon found myself creating my own images from available light.

A particular film noir demonstrated to me the use of shadow and light as a means of creating tension and intrigue that I put to effect to differentiate my portraits.

For the latter fifteen years I tended to work on themes, spending in the region of two to three years on each subject.

My current project, “Ghosts of the Faithful Departed”, is set against the backdrop of isolation, hardship and loneliness as witnessed in rural Ireland in the 1950s. While taking the images I find myself being transported back to a time in my youth reminded by little things like wallpaper or valve radios in contrast to the totally different Ireland of today.

Through the discipline of the use of a 1963 Linhof Technika large format camera I learnt and loved the slow pace of studying the scene, setting up the camera and finally capturing the shot. Now, however, I use Canon digital camera but my unhurried approach has remained unaltered.

All my work is produced on fine art Giclée prints Hahemule German etching 310 gm paper in limited editions of twenty-five with an average image size of 30x20 inches. Each print is signed, numbered, carries an embossment stamp and comes with an authentication certificate.
